Person-centred therapy rejects the idea of therapists as authorities on their clients’ inner experiences. Instead, therapists help clients change by emphasising their concern, care and interest and valuing the client as a person in all aspects of their humanity while aiming to be open and genuine.
The counsellor or psychotherapist in this approach works to understand an individual’s experience from their point of view and people as having an innate tendency to develop towards their full potential. Hence, the goal of person-centred therapy is to provide individuals with an opportunity to develop a sense of self where they can realise how their attitudes, feelings and behaviour are affecting them.
