Narrative Therapy – is a form of psychotherapy that seeks to help individuals identify their values and the skills and knowledge they have to live these values, so they can effectively co-create a more helpful narrative about themselves and their identity.
It views problems as separate from the individual and assumes that the individual has many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives. One important perspective of Narrative Therapy is that it approaches people as having no fixed identity that needs correcting rather there are only a bunch of helpful or unhelpful stories that influence our life. It postulates that we become who we are based on the meanings assigned to ourselves and others, and how we think others see us. Helping clients to understand that their relationships with others are always shaping their self-identity is an important first step in therapy.
