EMDR is a psychological therapy, recognised by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence and the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
EMDR was developed by American clinical psychologist Francine Shapiro in the 1980s. The therapy involves the identification of unprocessed traumatic or other distressing experiences that are continuing to drive an individual’s psychological disturbance. It was originally used with great effect on veterans of the Vietnam War. This therapy is now used for any psychological disorder that can be traced to trauma or adverse life events.
Occasionally, unprocessed emotionally charged information can get ‘stuck‘, resulting in flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares. EMDR therapy helps reprocess traumatic memories through bilateral stimulation of the brain. EMDR may be effective
We are trained in EMDR techniques through the Australian College of Hypnotherapy as part of Clinical Hypnotherapy Training Diploma and often use it alongside hypnosis.
