Existential therapy: it’s a philosophical method of therapy that operates on the belief that inner conflict within a person is due to that individual’s confrontation with the givens of existence. It focuses on free will, self-determination and the search for meaning.
Existential psychotherapy does not focus on an individual’s past, rather the goal is to work with the person to discover and explore the choices that lie before him or her. Through retrospection, the person in therapy and therapist work to understand and take responsibility for the implications of past choices and the beliefs that led those to take place, with the aim of realising a deeper insight into oneself.
The existential approach is all about exploring meaning and value and learning to live authentically — that is, in accordance with one’s own ideals, priorities and values.
